The MonkeyBean Co-op is a program designed to help 3 groups:
Finding a job is tough. Finding a job you like is even tougher. And when you're a student, it's hard to stand out until you have some experience under your belt. This is where the Co-op comes into play.
The Co-op gives the opportunity to work on real-world software and acquire important job skills. Participants are put into teams and asked to work on various components of a piece of software. They are teamed up with a mentor who will guide them along and teach them about the tools used at MonkeyBean, such as Python and Django. Students get to learn valuable software development techinques that will prepare them for jobs after graduation. Job seekers get a foot in the door at MonkeyBean in addition to learning more technical skills to help them find work elsewhere.
Software is expensive. So if you can find somebody to develop software for free, you can't say no. Non-profits benefit from having software developed for them by professional developers using only open-source tools so if changes have to be made down the road, there are no overhead costs involved. We want to do our part to make this world a better place, and this just a start.
We benefit in two ways. First, we get to help the community. You can't put a price on lending someone a helping hand. But secondly, we get a more skilled workforce who are well versed in the practices and technologies employed at MonkeyBean. In other words, we get potential recruits walking through our doors. It allows us to really assess a person's ability and reduces the time spent in hiring and training (and maybe firing!) individuals.
